Tompkins Transportation Scout is a new initiative designed to improve access to transportation services and multimodal trip planning throughout Tompkins County. Our mission is to ensure that every resident—from seniors and people with disabilities to those lacking internet or smartphone access—can easily connect to essential services and opportunities.

Our Mission

We are committed to:

  • Expanding Public Access: Offer comprehensive information about local and intercity mobility services, including support for non-English speakers. Ensure that Tompkins County residents living in both urban and rural places have access to transportation to get them where they need to go.
  • Enhancing Safety & Customer Service: Provide a user-friendly app to plan routes, navigate safely, safe navigation, and the best possible client experience.
  • Increasing Mobility Options: Work with individuals facing transportation barriers to come up with personalized and innovative solutions.

Tompkins Transportation Scout Mobile/Web App Key Features

  1. Call Center & Smartphone App
    A user-friendly multimodal trip planning and tracking app connecting Tompkins County residents to local transportation routes and services. Transportation Specialists from 211 Tompkins are available at 2-1-1 (or 1-877-211-8667) to assist with app use and take your questions.

  2. Emergency Ride Home Program
    In partnership with GO ITHACA, the app features access to Emergency Ride Home (ERH). For those times when you are stuck and could use an Uber, four ERH rides are available per year. The first can be redeemed directly via the TTS app!

  3. On-Demand Trip Planning
    Enter where you are and where you want to go. Tompkins Transportation Scout will show you available transportation options, including the numbers and times of arrival for TCAT buses and any available local rideshares.

    Use map layers like bike racks and paths, Ithaca Carshare locations, and park and ride lots to plan your route your way with local transportation markers.

    Record your trips to earn reward points towards gift card drawings. Save repeating trips, track trips with automation. Like to exercise or just get fresh air? Your walk and bike trips can also be pulled from Garmin and Strava.

  4. ADA and WCAG 2.0 Compliant
    The mobile and web apps are designed to ADA legal expectations and WCAG technical accessibility standards, ensuring a fully-accessible experience.

Funding and Support

Tompkins Transportation Scout was made possible thanks to a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Integrated Mobility Innovation Demonstration Program grant. Awarded in August 2019, this funding supports the development of our multimodal trip planning program, information call center, and smartphone app—all working to enhance connectivity for the entire community.
